Department of Biotechnology Calling for Proposals in the area of Plant Metablomics

Department has supported major programmes on structural and functional genomics of important crops like rice and tomato. It is now important to evaluate the level at which genomic information can be applied to potential biotechnological applications for a crop improvement. Metablomics has been identified as a priority area. Pre-proposals are invited in the following identified priority areas : -
I. Network Programme on Metablomics of Tomato for generating the complete Metablomic Profile. Networks on Rice and Potato could also be considered. Focus of activities may also includes:
(a) Identifying important genotypes and appropriate genetic resources, identify horticulture related wild species by screening the wild germplasm.
(b) Search for plant metabolites of nutritional importance for human health.
(c) Generating general metabolite profile which could further be used for specific metabolite profile.
(d) Developing metablomic profiles taking fruit quality, texture, colour etc. into consideration.
(e) Generating metabolite profile for aroma of basmati rice.
Only network multi-institutional projects tackling the problem with an end to end approach would be considered.
II. In addition individual projects would also be considered with a targeted approach to:
(a) Look for plant metabolites of medicinal importance.
(b) Genotypic difference in fruit/vegetable quality and phenotype.
(c) Integrate data sets in response to abiotic stress tolerance / susceptibility and resistance to pathogens
(d) Integrate transcriptiomics proteomic and metablomic data sets in various plant development process and responses to environment.
(e) Generate metabolite library.
Who Can Apply ?
Scientists working in the Universities, Research Institutions, Industry and related agencies holding a permanent position with relevant experience in the area would be eligible to apply
How to Apply ?
5 copies of the pre-proposal highlighting objectives, leads available, methodology, expected outcome and linkages with the other groups alongwith budgetary requirements may be sent by post to Dr. Meenakshi Munshi, Joint Director, Department of Biotechnology, Block –2, 7th Floor, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi – 110 003 alongwith a softcopy at the email address
meenakshi29@dbt.nic.in. The proposal should also contain a brief biodata of all concerned scientists including relevant publications in referred journals during last 3 years.
Last Date
The last date for submission of pre-proposal is 15th July, 2008.
