Conference Participation and Submission of Abstracts

Preparation of Posters

The space available for each poster would be of 3 x 4 feet. Each poster would be alloted a number, which would be mounted on the top of the board by the organizers. Top section of the poster should indicate its title, authors and address. It is suggested to divide the contents of the poster into Introduction, Results and Conclusions. The poster should be put up every day in the morning between 08:00 - 09:00 Hrs and taken down after 17:00 Hrs same day. The authors are expected to be present near their posters during the poster session.

Third Fujio-Cup Quiz Inter-Collegiate Quiz Competition on Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine by NCRM

Jul 2008, Chennai; Fujio Cup Quiz - An Exclusive Quiz Competition on Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine for the third consecutive time, will be held on Saturday the 11th October 2008 at Chennai in commemoration of the 3rd anniversary of Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), Chennai, an Indo - Japan Joint Venture Institute accomplishing training, research and clinical application-protocol development in cell therapeutics with emphasis on stem cells. The objectives of the quiz competition is to motivate the Biotech, Biology and Medical students by exposing them to potentials of this field, to evaluate and develop the skills and capabilities of the young and budding scientists and to make more collaborations and exchange between basic scientists and medical personnel. This is the third consecutive year, this anniversary commemorative event being held and previous years it had a participation of more than 120 institutes from the southern part of India.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate students of Medical, Biology and Biotechnology courses enrolled in government and private institutes within the four southern states are eligible to participate. The subjects covered will be basics and essentials of (i) History and Development of Stem Cells / Regenerative Medicine, (ii) Cell Biology, (iii) Molecular Biology, (iv) Stem Cells Pre-Clinical and Clinical Applications / Cell Therapeutics, (v) Immunology, (vi) Cancer Biology, (vii) Developmental Biology (viii) Ethics and (ix) Nanotechnology. A preliminary round of written test will be conducted to choose the best SIX teams who will face the final round in which there will be General, and Visual Rounds. Finalists of last year’s quiz cannot participate but their institutes can be represented with different members.

The WINNING team of the Quiz will get a Cash Prize of Rs. 10,000/- and the institute to which the winning team belongs to will be awarded with the Prestigious "Fujio Cup". Department of Biotechnology Calling for Proposals in the area of Plant Metablomics

Department has supported major programmes on structural and functional genomics of important crops like rice and tomato. It is now important to evaluate the level at which genomic information can be applied to potential biotechnological applications for a crop improvement. Metablomics has been identified as a priority area. Pre-proposals are invited in the following identified priority areas : -
I. Network Programme on Metablomics of Tomato for generating the complete Metablomic Profile. Networks on Rice and Potato could also be considered. Focus of activities may also includes:
(a) Identifying important genotypes and appropriate genetic resources, identify horticulture related wild species by screening the wild germplasm.
(b) Search for plant metabolites of nutritional importance for human health.
(c) Generating general metabolite profile which could further be used for specific metabolite profile.
(d) Developing metablomic profiles taking fruit quality, texture, colour etc. into consideration.
(e) Generating metabolite profile for aroma of basmati rice.
Only network multi-institutional projects tackling the problem with an end to end approach would be considered.
II. In addition individual projects would also be considered with a targeted approach to:
(a) Look for plant metabolites of medicinal importance.
(b) Genotypic difference in fruit/vegetable quality and phenotype.
(c) Integrate data sets in response to abiotic stress tolerance / susceptibility and resistance to pathogens
(d) Integrate transcriptiomics proteomic and metablomic data sets in various plant development process and responses to environment.

Department of Biotechnology is calling for PRE-PROPOSAL on Application of Molecular Markers for crop improvement under grand challenge programme

Department of Biotechnology, Government of India is planning to develop a major project under Grand Challenge Programme on validation and utilization of already identified markers available in public domain for important traits for improving our crops for better productivity through MAS and invites pre-proposal from Universities, Public and Private Research Institutes and non-profit organization in the country for funding. In particular, concept paper giving a brief outline of the project aimed at improving crop plants through integrated plant breeding involving MAS will be considered. Priority will be given to the projects focused at the delivery of product(s) in the form of a variety or improved genetic stock having potential as a breeding material. Those having expertise in respective areas as evident from the publications in high-impact factor journals or product development may apply. The pre-proposal not exceeding 5-7 pages elaborating the current problems and molecular breeding strategies alleviating the problem in 3-5 years period may be submitted.
Fifteen (15) copies of the duly signed pre-proposal forwarded by the competent authority which should include title of the concept, its preliminary proof, major objectives/ milestones, expected deliverables / outcomes along with proof of having expertise in form of publications in high impact factor journals, lowest amount of the budget which you need, projects in hand and association with industry may be submitted positively by 15th July 2008 to Dr. R. R. Sinha, Advisor, Department of Biotechnology, Block 2, 6th Floor, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi 110 003. The Department of Biotechnology encourages joint proposals from competent persons from multiple institutions with clear complementation of activities. Pre-proposals with scientific merit, only in the desired area as mentioned above will be short-listed by a screening committee for discussion and development of detailed research proposals.
